Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is the latest installment in the Marvel vs. Capcom series of crossover games by Capcom. It was released on September 19, 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The game features returning and new characters from both Marvel and Capcom in two-on-two battles. The game re-introduces the Infinity Stones mechanic from Marvel Super Heroes.

|| GAMEPLAY ||

#marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite features two-on-two tag battles, similar to Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and earlier installments in the franchise. Assist mechanics are removed, and are replaced by "Active Switch", a free-form tag system similar to Street Fighter x Tekken. It allows continuous combos between the two characters while on the ground or in the air. Players can also sacrifice meter from their Hyper Combo Gauge to perform a "Counter Switch", tagging-in their partner while the opponent is attacking them, providing the opportunity to counterattack and free the character trapped in the enemy's combo. Before the match begins, players can switch their two selected characters.

In place of the X-Factor, a new mechanic, the Infinity Stones, are re-introduced to the series. Similar to Marvel Super Heroes, the Infinity Stones are six stones that grant various powers and abilities that may change the tide of battle. Only one of the stones can be selected during character selection. During battle, the player can freely use an "Infinity Surge", one of the abilities granted by the stone. The stone gauge is filled only by taking damage and having one of your characters be defeated. Once the gauge is at 50% or more, an "Infinity Storm" can be activated by pressing both the Active Switch and Infinity Surge buttons together.

During an active Infinity Storm, the user gains access to passive abilities often related to the Infinity Surge and/or its own source material for the duration (the user who activated it will also automatically have their own leitmotif override the current music). Users of an Infinity Storm can also access their Level 3 Hyper Combo in place of the regular Hyper Combo Gauge costs, which prematurely ends the Infinity Storm.

The game's button layout is similar to Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, which includes four attack buttons, consisting of two pairs of light and heavy punches and kicks, and two additional buttons used for the aforementioned Active Switch and Infinity Surge.

|| SYNOPSIS ||

One day in a Marvel Universe, without warning, a Convergence occurs, merging various locations with the worlds of Capcom (Becoming Earth-30847). At the center of the convergence, stands Ultron Sigma, a merged form of Ultron, the Avengers' robotic nemesis, and Sigma, arch-enemy of X and Zero. The new villain used the Space and Reality Stones to cause the convergence, and unleashed an evolved form of the Sigma Virus on the merged world to infect the population and turn them into cyborgs under his control.

Eighty-eight days after the convergence, Captain America leads a group of heroes in an assault on Ultron Sigma's base in Xgard. While most of them manage to distract Ultron Sigma's forces of drones and infected Asgardians, a small group led by Chris and Doctor Strange infiltrate the base's underground prison to find the Mad Titan, Thanos, whom Ultron Sigma had taken hostage. Even though some of them are cautious about getting his help, the heroes get Thanos out of his prison and manage to escape from the villain's grasp, at the cost of Thor slowly being infected.

Returning to their base in Avengers Tower in New Metro City, the heroes put Thanos behind a force field for safety precautions. Even though Iron Man and Chun-Li object to it, Doctor Strange uses his magic to release Thanos from his chains. At that moment, Thor's infection fully takes him over, and speaking through him, Ultron Sigma taunts the heroes, proclaiming that they will eventually be infected too. . . . ( no more spoilers )
