Bin strike: Give council tax back? Feat. Carole Malone & Ava Santina | Storm Huntley

In the month since industrial action began over pay and jobs, 21 thousand tonnes of waste has piled up on Birmingham's streets, attracting rats as big as cats.

It's left residents demanding refunds on their council tax.

And those calls are likely to intensify after councillors failed to reach a deal with the Unite union last night, and with nearby Lichfield Council stepping in from today to help clear the mountains of rubbish. Birmingham said talks were productive

Birmingham City raised council tax by 7.5% this month, with the typical Band D household now paying over 2 thousand 200 pounds a year. £2,237 up from £2,083.76

That follows a 10% rise last year after the Labour-run council effectively declared bankruptcy.in October 2023

The authority pointed out that council tax funds a variety of services and blamed the union, rather than actions taken by the council, for the state of the city.
