Cavalon launch sequence
This is the take off process for the Cavalon gyroplane. We run through pre-rotation, running down the strip, then taking off and into the climb.
Turn the rotor brake to flight; whilst holding the wheel brakes increase engine revs to 2200rpm; hold down the pre-rotator button to start turning the rotor - watch the engine revs don't drop too much by slowly advancing the throttle whilst monitoring the rotor rpm; when the rotor hits 200-220rpm release the pre-rotator button, ease back on the stick to full back to present the rotors to the oncoming airflow (which will keep them turning); release the wheel brake and ease the throttle forward; eyes watching the rotor rpm and down the runway - when the rotor speed is moving through 250rpm ease the stick forward a couple of inches and advance the throttle full forward (stop watching the rotor rpm now and predominately look ahead down the strip); as the front wheel becomes light you need to manage the stick so that the front wheel is balanced off the runway, presenting the attitude with the nose wheel just off the runway until the aircraft automatically lifts itself off the ground when sufficient rotor speed has been achieved (this is usually when the rotor speed is increasing through 300rpm) - let the gyro gently fly off and sit about 1 metre above the ground to build up airspeed to 55-60kn, then you can begin the climb out and trim as required.
Sound like a lot of work? Well it can be, but it's also a LOT of fun. If you want to experience this for yourself come visit us at www.rotor-sport.com.au and book your first flight - careful, you might get hooked!
