CHRISTMAS IN EL SALVADOR 🇸🇻 Multicultural Christmas Traditions

Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad! This will be my 13th Christmas in El Salvador….and Christmas in El Salvador is AMAZING but it is a little bit different a little bit spicier than my Childhood Christmas'

My first Christmas Eve (as I used to call it) here in El Salvador, was so much fun. I hadn’t noticed anything I would call a culture shock, it was just a fiesta. There was Cumbia Music and dancing and drinking and firecrackers (so many firecrackers) and at midnight everyone opens their presents in a mad frenzy all at once, and everyone stays up and I mean everyone the Children, the parents, the grandparents, the chuchos…until you literally pass out around 2 or even 5 am. It is a blast!!!!

My shock came the next morning on the 25th around 6 am when I woke Carlos in an excited glee telling him it was time to get up, it was Christmas Morning…and Carlos looked at me like I had 3 heads…Christmas was last night…it was over…and I was so sad

You see, My first Christmas in El Salvador was AMAZING. I just hadn’t realized that it WAS Christmas. To me Christmas was the morning of the 25th….you come out as a family and discover Santa has come, you open stockings, you eat a big breakfast, and then you slowly open presents one by one under the tree…spending a slow day with family in pajamas playing board games and eating leftovers. That’s just how it was always done.

I made a vow that starting next year we would Celebrate both Christmas’s, Navidad Salvadoreno on the night of the 24th and Carol’s Christmas early in the morning of the 25, and so we did…

And this is how I almost ruined Christmas for everyone…for many years.

Until….One late December 23rd I had the best idea EVER….I don’t have to give up my Hastings family Christmas traditions but why did they HAVE to be the morning of the 25th? Why couldn’t we as a family move the date the the morning of the 24th?

This simple change revolutionized Christmas for our family. The morning of th 24th we celebrate Gringa/Hastings slow family Christmas and in the afternoon we switch to Salvadoran Feliz navidad Fesitivities complete with fireworks, cumbia, and of course FAMILY. And this is what works for our blended multicultural family living in El Salvador. This way we can honor both cultures and have fun in the process.

How do you celebrate Christmas? What traditions have you kept from your childhood? What new traditions have you created with your family?
