Mandating masks open up the prospect 'of authoritarian govt overreach'

The public should have the choice to wear masks, rather than being mandated to do so by the government, according to Sky News host Rowan Dean.

Face masks are now mandatory for all residents over the age of 12 in greater metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said masks would be mandatory for as long as they were effective in preventing community transmission.

Police have the power to issue on-the-spot $200 fines to anyone not wearing a mask without a valid medical exception.

Major supermarkets including Coles and Woolworths said they would refuse service to anyone not wearing a mask and would call police if customers refused to comply.

Mr Dean said while he doesn't have a problem with government advice on wearing masks, mandating it "takes on a much broader and dangerous role."
