Growing Papaya in a Container - Terrace Garden
A step by step explanation on growing Papaya, with tips and tricks on how to grow it in your Terrace Garden. Including differentiating between female and male papaya and seeding selection and other gardening details.
I have been cultivating terrace garden from past two years in Bangalore, India. We made this video of Papaya in our terrace garden to share our experience of the same.
Growing Papaya in a container(pot) is always challenging and gives immense pleasure as you see them grow. Seeing them grow from those tiny little seedlings to those big beautiful leaves (that too in a container) is an experience in itself.
TYPES -- Papayas are of three types Male, Female and Bisexual, It is impossible to find out type of seedlings till is starts to flower.
Luckily we have one male plant and one female plant in our garden. I suggest to keep few (4-6) seedlings to grow till it starts to bud. You can keep one male plant for ten female plant.
Male bud is thin and small when compared to female bud. Male flowers grows in bunches whereas female flowers will be one or two at a stretch.
When my male papaya plant started to flower I was disappointed initially because I wasn't sure about the other plant type. After almost 3 weeks my female papaya plant started to flower :)
POLLINATION -- I pollinated it manually with male flowers. I did it carefully for 4 flowers.I started realizing that my Papaya plants are small, stems may be week compared to Papaya trees grown on fields. So I stopped pollinating female flowers also removed few buds. I really don’t want Papayas in lemon size :)
I could see little papayas coming out in lemon yellow colour and then slowly turning into dark green colour. For a month it was growing in length later it took a slight a round shape .
Now it has become centre of attraction in terrace garden. We thought it will be great to share this knowledge and information on YouTube and produced a video out of it.
Also I have grown Coriander, Mint (Pudina), Okra, Bitter gourd, Musk Melon, Cucumber, Tomatoes, Spinach (Palak), Egg Plant(Brinjal), Amaranthus, Hyacinth (Lablab), Ash Gourd (Winter Melon), Spring onions, Sugar Apples and different type of flowers in our Terrace Garden.
Lots more to try:)
