CYBER CRIME
Introduction
Cyber crime is one of the fastest-growing forms of crime in the modern digital world. With the rapid development of the internet, smartphones, and online platforms, people are becoming more dependent on technology. However, this dependence has also increased the risk of cyber crimes.
Cyber crime refers to illegal activities carried out using computers, digital devices, or the internet. It affects individuals, organizations, and even governments.
Example:
Online fraud, hacking bank accounts, identity theft, etc.
Meaning of Cyber Crime
Cyber crime is defined as any criminal activity that involves a computer, network, or digital system.
It can be:
Tool → Computer used to commit crime (e.g., fraud)
Target → Computer system attacked (e.g., hacking)
Both → Example: spreading viruses
Types of Cyber Crime
Cyber crimes can be classified into different types:
(A) Crimes Against Individuals
These crimes target a specific person.
1. Identity Theft
Stealing someone's personal information like Aadhaar, bank details, passwords.
Example: Using someone’s ATM card details for fraud.
2. Cyber Stalking
Harassing or threatening someone online.
Example: Sending repeated unwanted messages on social media.
3. Online Fraud / Phishing
Fake emails or messages to steal sensitive data.
Example: Fake bank message asking for OTP.
4. Cyber Bullying
Using the internet to insult or harm someone emotionally.
Example: Posting abusive comments online.
(B) Crimes Against Property
These crimes target digital property or data.
1. Hacking
Unauthorized access to a computer system.
Example: Breaking into someone’s email account.
2. Virus / Malware Attacks
Malicious software used to damage or steal data.
Example: Ransomware locking files and demanding money.
3. Intellectual Property Theft
Stealing copyrighted content like software, music, or videos.
Example: Illegal downloading of movies.
(C) Crimes Against Organizations
Target companies or institutions.
1. Data Breach
Stealing confidential company data.
Example: Leaking customer database.
2. Denial of Service (DoS Attack)
Making a website unavailable by flooding traffic.
Example: Crashing a company website.
3. Email Bombing
Sending a large number of emails to disrupt services.
(D) Crimes Against Society & Government
These crimes affect the whole nation or society.
1. Cyber Terrorism
Using the internet to spread fear or attack national systems.
2. Fake News / Misinformation
Spreading false information to create panic.
3. Online Gambling & Illegal Activities
Illegal betting, trafficking, etc.

Conclusion
Cyber crime is a serious threat in today’s digital age. As technology grows, cyber crimes are also increasing. Therefore, awareness, cybersecurity measures, and strict laws are necessary to control it.
