Ask the Expert: Preventing Diesel Engine Runaway

Diesel engine runaway is a dangerous condition in which a hydrocarbon vapor is ingested into the air intake system of a diesel engine, causing it to speed out of control. Consequences range from equipment damage to operator injury or death. Fortunately, safety devices called air intake shut off valves can prevent this from happening.

There are many different styles and sizes of valves available, so it’s easy to find one that will fit your engine make and model. Engines used in upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas operations are especially at risk of becoming an ignition source to an uncontrolled hydrocarbon release. They need to be protected. Examples of these types of engines include:
• Generators
• Light towers
• Well servicing equipment, like frac blenders and coil tubing units
• Pickup trucks
• And heavy-duty trucks, like tankers and product haulers
