The Way Through the Woods poem Questions and Answers by Rudyard Kipling
Where could the feet of a horse be heard?
Ans. The hooves of a horse could be heard along an old lost road in the woods.
2. Describe the woods in the poem ‘ The Way through the Woods’.
Ans. The woods were lonely and foggy with hardly any sign of a human being wandering about. An old road lay buried under the wild plants. Occasionally, a dove or a badger could be seen moving around. The woods were mysterious. On late summer evenings, the swishing sound of a ghostly lady could be heard as she rode her horse through the silence.
3. Name the animals mentioned in the poem.
Ans. The animals mentioned in the poem are ring-dove, badger, otter, trout and a horse.
4. Who knew about the old lost road in the woods?
Ans. The keeper of the woods knew about the old lost road in the woods. The ghost of the female rider and her horse were also well aware of the existence of this road.
5. What is the proof that the lady and her horse were ghosts?
Ans. In the stillness of the night, the lady and her horse were riding comfortably through a road that had disappeared from view around seventy years earlier. It would not be possible for a human being and his horse to pass through the woods without any visible road. However, the ghostly riders could do so because they were not living beings. They were spirits who seemed to have crossed this forest many times, around seventy years before, when the road was in good shape.
6. Why had the road disappeared from view?
Ans. The road had disappeared from view because people had grown trees in that area. The harsh weather had also destroyed the road. All kinds of plants had grown over the path.
