Driving in Italy 2: Stelvio Pass (From Trafoi to Bormio) | 4K 60fps

Scenic drive thru Stelvio National Park from Trafoi to Bormio in Ortler Alps (Ortles). Stelvio Pass (Italian: Passo dello Stelvio / Giogo Dello Stelvio, German: Stilfser Joch / Stilfserjoch) is the second highest paved mountain pass in Alps (2757 metres ~ 9045 feet above sea level). Second part of my road trip from Resia to Bormio and Livigno in northern Italy.

Brief History
Original road was built in 1820–25 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardy with the rest of Austria. The engineer and project manager was Carlo Donegani (1775–1845). Since then, the route has changed very little. Its seventy-five hairpin turns, 48 of them on the northern side numbered with stones, are a challenge to motorists.
During World War I in 1914–18, Italian and Austrian-Hungarian troops fought a mountain warfare that involved the border region around the Stelvio Pass. Soldiers lost their lives in combat, or due to avalanche or rockfall accidents in the high alpine environment. Here the world's highest battle was fought during World War I. The dramatic images of the encounters between 1915 and 1918, memorabilia from the so-called White War and even a reconstruction of a trench can be seen at the Carlo Donegani History Museum.
