Why 500,000 People in Italy Live Inside a Volcano
Europe's most dangerous volcano is completely invisible....until you know how to see it. In this video, I map and analyze Campi Flegrei, a 12-kilometer-wide volcanic caldera hidden beneath the suburbs of Naples, Italy. Using elevation data, earthquake visualizations, and ground deformation analysis, I'll show why 500,000 people live inside an active supervolcano that's showing unprecedented signs of unrest.
Main Points:
How to identify invisible calderas using elevation maps
Why the ground beneath Pozzuoli is rising at 25mm per month
The scientific debate: magma vs. hydrothermal activity
Why evacuation plans for 500,000 people may be impossible
The €30-40 billion per year cost of a false alarm
Geographic Analysis: This video uses QGIS, earthquake data, and Geolayers for visualizations to show why Naples faces the highest volcanic risk in the world. I break down the Red Zone (pyroclastic flow danger), Yellow Zone (ash fall danger), and the geographic issues that make mass evacuation nearly impossible.
Current Status (2025): Campi Flegrei is at Yellow alert level with accelerating ground uplift, shallow earthquake swarms clustered at 4km depth, and 5,500 tons of CO2 released daily. Scientists cannot agree whether this unrest will lead to eruption or eventually subside.
