Sweden: A Gangster’s Paradise | Unreported World

Unreported World is on the frontline of Sweden’s deadly gang war, as the country becomes one of the most deadly for gun crime in Europe. Now the turmoil is increasingly being committed by children as reporter Paraic O’Brien follows the family of one young man who was gunned down on his doorstep.

The once quiet suburbs of Sweden’s major cities are now the epicentre of a vicious turf war between rival gangs competing for the drug trade. More than 45 people have been shot dead so far this year, double the European average. The unprecedented spike in violence has forced the government to bring in the military to assist police.

In Stockholm, O'Brien meets Jamac Mumin Omar, a father who is now desperately trying to come to terms with the vicious shooting of his son Yahya. To date no one has been charged with his death, which the police have described as gang related. Amid low conviction rates, Jamac, believes he’s been let down by Sweden’s justice system. Meanwhile O’Brien comes face to face with the gangs themselves, who show little remorse for the people they have killed.
