EFATO - When to engage the Autopilot?
When do you engage the autopilot after take off with an engine failure?
Will the autopilot reduce your workload engaging at minimum altitude?
What happens on the Boeing 737 if you engage the autopilot at 400' with and without VNAV from in the sim, 69T, 22k derate assumed temperature. A review of the modes, a comparison in the sim and review of the FCTM (Flight Crew Training Manual). What are the threats?
This Tutorial is for professional pilots, trainees and enthusiasts. Helping to maintain, develop and refresh piloting skills and knowledge to be prepared for a real life emergency, sim check, assessment or evaluation.
EFATO filmed from a simulator with Autopilot engaged at 400' with and without VNAV.
Boeing FCTM states: "When a safe altitude above 400' AGL with correct rudder pedal or trim input, the autopilot may be engaged. For airplanes with FMC U10.8 or later, when VNAV is armed for Take off, the autopilot is normally engaged anytime the airplane is above the minimum altitude for autopilot engagement. For airplanes with FMC U10.7 or earlier, autopliot engagement is normally delayed until the flaps are up and LVL CHG is selected. This allows AFDS to remain in the TO/GA mode during flap retraction".
The filming was conducted with U10.8A. In the case of without VNAV, TOGA will change to MCP SPD when the autopilot is engaged. With VNAV the footage shows the autopilot already engaged and having passed 400 feet, transition to VNAV SPD has already occurred.
This information should be used as a guide only and reflects opinions from the instructor based from years of experience in the simulator, observing and training pilots. Always consult your own Aircraft, company manuals and legislation.
