Kruger National Park: Big Five Country | A Green-Season Safari, South Africa

A green-season morning in the vast lowveld of Kruger National Park, and somewhere in the bush are the five animals that made this place legendary. This is the story of the Big Five and the wild country that holds them: why the name is a hunter's term, how a small reserve in 1898 grew into a park the size of a small country, and why the summer green season is the secret season of the African bush.

We drive the bushveld and meet each of the Big Five, woven through Kruger's history and the fight to keep the rhino alive.

ABOUT THIS PLACE
Kruger National Park spans the lowveld of northeastern South Africa, nearly 2 million hectares (about 19,485 sq km), roughly the size of a small country. It was first proclaimed in 1898 as the Sabie Game Reserve in the old Transvaal, and in 1926 the Sabie and Shingwedzi reserves were combined and renamed Kruger National Park after Paul Kruger. The Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo, and rhinoceros, were named by big-game hunters for the five animals hardest and most dangerous to hunt on foot, not for their size. The green season, the summer rains from roughly November to March, brings lush bush, migratory birds, and newborn animals. Kruger's rhinos now live under armed anti-poaching guard.
