A Parent’s Guide to GroupMe
What is GroupMe? GroupMe is a free group chat and messaging app available for both iOS and Android. It’s popular among young people, college students, and sports teams as a way to communicate quickly among a large group. Thanks to features like polls and events, it also makes it easy to plan in-person meet-ups.
As you probably know, there are tons of ways to start a group chat, from texts and email to Instagram DMs and WhatsApp. So what makes the GroupMe app different? It’s easy to use, free, and doesn’t use up data — it can work on Wi-Fi alone.
GroupMe gives users the ability to add tons of group chats and keep them arranged. In addition to chatting in the group thread, you can also send DMs to other members — both from a specific chat as well as from any other group you’ve even been a member of.
Dangers of GroupMe
Bullying and inappropriate content are two of the primary dangers of GroupMe that parent’s need to be aware of. Bullying can happen any time large groups of kids interact online, and inappropriate content like porn, profanity, and more also is common when kids can message without adult supervision.
GroupMe also has a hidden browser that kids may be able to access. Unfortunately GroupMe has absolutely no parental controls, so you can’t block this browser, or even enable any sort of other guardrails, like blocking keywords to help prevent access to inappropriate content.
Fortunately there’s a way to help keep your child safe as they use GroupMe to stay in touch with friends.
Bark’s powerful technology can monitor group messages, direct messages, and images and video in both.
