V-Star 650 Oil and Air Filter Change

A quick video on changing the oil, oil filter and air filter on my friend Dell's, 2000 Yamaha V-Star 650. At the time of filming this, Dell was calling his bike, "Black Otter." He has since changed its name, and is now calling it, "Otter Chaos." Thanks to a sticker I got for the bike.

Changing the oil filter is the hardest part of this job. Simply because you have to remove 8 bolts to get the filter off and of course one is located in a fairly difficult spot, behind the brake peddle. Having allen wrenches with rounded tip heads, helps. Some people are calling them, hex keys or hex wrenches now a days. I'm old fashioned and still call them allen wrenches.

However, I also did something different, in that, I didn't run the engine to warm up the oil. I was watching someone on YouTube, and he was saying the main reasons for running the motor is:
1. To heat up the oil so it flows out better.
2. To mix any particulates into the oil, so it flows out with the oil.

His reasoning for not running the engine is:
1. All the oil is already in the oil pan. You don't have to wait for all the oil to drain down and out of the engine.
2. Any particulates should have been caught by the filter, the last time you rode it. So, if you have particulates in your oil pan, after riding, you have some major issues going on. And an oil change is the least of your worries.

So, yes, I have opted out of the whole "run the engine before doing an oil change," thing. That's my personal opinion. You do what you want.
