Can social media really change politics?

From the Arab Spring and #MeToo to India's Farmers' Protest and the recent Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) mobilisation, the internet has transformed how protests emerge, spread, and influence public discourse.

In this video, we explore the sociology of Networked Protests, a concept that explains how hashtags, memes, viral videos, and digital communities can turn private frustration into collective action.

Drawing on the work of sociologist Zeynep Tufekci and her influential book Twitter and Tear Gas, we examine why some online movements reshape politics while others fade away after the initial wave of attention.

Why did the Arab Spring produce such different outcomes across countries? Why did #MeToo change culture but struggle with institutional reform? And why was India's Farmers' Protest able to sustain pressure for months and eventually achieve political results?
