A Google Home Mini is a smart speaker that can handle many functions of your smartphone using only your voice.

The Mini packs the brain power of the Google search engine in combination with other information about you to provide useful answers and actions to voice commands. Google Home devices can also be used to control smart devices.

I used the smart speaker to listen to news, music, my favorite podcasts and make phone calls without touching my new smartphone. The apps you use are invisible because they are just integrated into your voice commands.

I can request music by types and artists and it will match you with a station on Google Music, Pandora or Spotify. There is a trial version for YouTube Music.

Podcasts are no problem: I requested, "Hey Google, play This Week in Google podcast" and it announces the current week's podcast and plays it. If you stop the podcast and return to it later it will pick up where it left off.

"Hey Google, play NPR news" or Hey Google, play Fox news" and you get an hourly update of the top news from that source.

I say, "Hey Google, stream WITF" and the speaker becomes a radio streaming the radio station live.

If I come up with a question or statement such as, "Hey Google, what time is it?...What's the temperature outside?...Set a timer for 15 minutes... How many ounces are in the gallon?... Set my thermostat to 62 degrees," the media playing will pause in the background and resume after the question is answered or statement acted upon.

There are many situations when it would be better not to touch a smartphone, such as cooking, painting and taking a bath.

I ordered a second Google Home Mini for $20 on Black Friday. Multiple units can be used as an intercom for global messaging to all units at the same time and to target an individual unit in an intercom network.

Just having a hands-free radio in the morning is useful for the price, but there really is a world of functionality here at a fraction of the cost of a second smartphone or tablet.

Google Home smart speakers are also sold as more expensive devices with better speakers and more hardware functionality, the original Google Home and the new Google Home Max.

There have been several brands of smart speakers with various levels of sound quality and corresponding cost on the market for several years.

Amazon Alexa debuted in 2014 and the Microsoft-powered Harman Kardon Invoke came on the scene more recently. Apple's HomePod smart speaker is expected to debut in early 2018.
