Number 1:
At first you have to do a proper physical inspection of the device look for any damaged side and condition of the phone then slide your finger nail between frame and the back to feel an irregularities or glue between the two halfs, if you feel any things strange or glu between display and the frame it means that device is refurbished or repaired if there is no sign of glue it means that device is not repaired.

Number 2:
At second number you need to check the camera lenses carefully under good lighting to see any dust or glue under the camera lens if you see any such thing, don't buy that device because most of the phones or ip67 or ip68 there is no chance of getting dust inside the camera lenses.

Number 3:
3rd thing to check is the battery life, poor battery life may result in overall bad experience so before you buy any old iPhone or android check it's battery health, open the camera app and go to video settings turn on 4k-60fps video record it for 10min with full display brightness. Any modern phone should drop 2-3% battery but if it's old phone or any pixel device it should drop 5-6% battery which is considered good battery health.

Number 4:
Display is the most expensive part of your device you should check it properly before buying any used for old phone, go to any white background and look for shade, pixel burning, dot or line in the display if you don't find any such thing go to play store and take a screenshot, then go to gallery and zoom that picture to check the status bar properly. If you find any screen burning or permanent pixels in the display don't buy such device.

Number 5:
This is also relevant to your display I am talking about touch because no shopkeeper or no vendor offer warranty regarding to touch of any used smartphone. There is very simple method to check the touch, long press any of the app you will notice it starts to float, pick that app and move it around all the four corners of your phone then cover the whole screen with it, move it all over the display to see any dad touch spots or any problem in the display.

Number 6:
Nowadays most of the phones are coming with ip67 or ip68 water and dust resistance so if your phone is waterproof there are high chances that it's genuine phone without being opened or repair. You can check it without putting your device in water just take out sim tray and suck the air from the opening where you took off sim tray, if you feel there is vacuum inside the phone it's waterproof device because if air could not cross there is no chance of water. But if you feel there is no pressure building inside the phone there is high chance that device is opened or repair or refurbished don't by such phones.

Number 7:
At last is the most important thing which is to check whether your device is factory unlock or its network lock. For this you have to open the settings app and go to about, tap on build number for 8-9 times.
You will see there saying that you are a developer now after that go to developer settings and find oem unlocking if it's already unlock or you can unlock it with just the toggle your device is factory unlock if it's lock and saying contact your career it means your device is network locked and don't buy such devices because you won't be able to use SIM.
