“Two Ends of Civilization” by Dali Higa.

Two Ends of Civilization

Have you noticed?
Art is never just an image on canvas—
behind it lies the spirit of civilization.

In Western oil paintings, light often descends from the sky.
Think of Rembrandt’s sacred glow,
a divine call shining through the darkness.
But in Chinese landscapes, light becomes vast blank space,
mist and breath of heaven and earth.
One lifts us upward in awe,
the other offers a place to dwell.

Time tells the same story.
In Western history paintings, time is an arrow,
racing from beginning to end,
frozen in dramatic moments.
But a Chinese scroll unfolds like a river—
you walk with it endlessly,
no finale, only continuity.

The body, too, reflects this.
Latin dance stretches wide, explosive and bold.
Chinese dance holds back, graceful and restrained,
like a brushstroke left unfinished.

Light and breath.
Lines and cycles.
Tension and subtlety.
They are not opposites,
but rhythms we share as humans.

Through art, civilizations converse in their differences—
and in contrast, we come to see ourselves more clearly.
