C. Raja Mohan on India’s Central Asia Strategy

C. Raja Mohan, Director of Carnegie India talks about India’s regional strategic standing, as well as its strategies for economic integration on the subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, and Eurasia. He also explained why India decided to part with previous international stances, such as leadership in the Non-Aligned Movement and membership in G77 bloc of countries at the United Nations.

According to Mohan, while India has been cut off from Central Asia following the British partitions of India, it is possible to build new routes to the region through Iran and Afghanistan. He noted that since the 1991 economic reforms, India has focused on regional integration and building an economic space in the Indian Ocean as well as creating ties with the neighboring spaces, Southeast Asia and Eurasia.
