SOLD - Replacing the popular R129 series of cars the R230 model was the fifth generation of SL roadsters and was produced from 2002 until 2011. A number of different engines were offered with power outputs ranging from 245 BHP right up to 612 BHP in the monstrous SL65 AMG.
On launch in 2002 these SL’s were expensive and rare. The list price of a SL500 before options was almost £70,000 back then with most cars benefitting from a host of factory options. Such was the rarity back then, new cars were being sold on for premiums of up to £20,000.
Our car, a 2003 SL500 fitted with the 5.0ltr V8 306BHP engine with automatic transmission has covered a mere 49,000 miles from new. Finished in the classic Silver Arrows combination of Brilliant Silver metallic paintwork with contrasting Anthracite leather the car has obviously had a pampered life and has the appearance of a much younger example.


Although these SL’s were nicely specified from new, our car was ordered with a host of features including perforated leather electrically operated memory seats with both heating and cooling, the dashboard trim is dark Birds Eye Maple veneer with a matching wood & leather steering wheel. The Comand infotainment system obviously has Sat Nav, but the car was also ordered with analog TV, BOSE speakers, the telephone handset resided in the centre console and there is a CD changer in the storage area behind the seats. Air suspension is also fitted as is Park Distance Control, keyless entry with push button start and 18” 5 spoke alloy wheels. There is also a windbreak fitted for bluster free open top touring.
The car comes with complete tool kit with wheel locking bolt, spare key, the leather document pouch containing the maintenance record showing 7 service entries and 11 MOT certificates confirming the low mileage.
These R230 cars today offer tremendous value for money although the lowest mileage examples with the nicest options are now commanding the prices that they deserve. If Mercedes SL history repeats itself this car could be a wise purchase and offer years of enjoyment for a small investment.
