HAWAII PACIFIC PARADISE 1960s HAWAII 54434

The 1960 film by famed industrial director Carl Dudley takes its viewer to the newly added 50th state — Hawaii. The capital city, Honolulu, is introduced at mark 00:46, and at mark 01:05 we see Diamond Head — a volcanic tuff cone on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. A United Airlines jet lands at Honolulu International Airport at mark 01:35 and we begin to follow four girls visiting the tropical paradise courtesy of a graduation gift from their parents. Warmly greeted by native Hawaiians at their hotel, the girls soon head to the Waikiki Beach for a taste of “sun, sand, and surf” (mark 03:10) before embarking on a shopping trip and pausing to watch a traditional hula dance and later visit the ʻIolani Palace, the royal residence of the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaii (mark 04:30), and glance at the famed statue of King Kamehameha. The film continues with scenic views from around the island and a somber visit to Pearl Harbor Naval Base (06:38) and view the remains of the USS Arizona. (The images are without the familiar white USS Arizona Memorial that today straddles the sunken hull of the battleship. The memorial was not constructed until 1962). The film takes the viewer from Oahu to the other islands, visiting sugarcane and pineapple plantations as well as volcanic craters and black sand beaches. The film shows us the beauty of Waimea Canyon on the western side of Kauai (mark 10:00) and takes us to a luau and its “gastronomic pleasure.” There are festive scenes from a parade celebrating Kamehameha Day (a public holiday celebrated on June 11) at mark 11:25 and a return to the beach before the girls (and the viewer) board a plane at mark 13:50 for the trip back to the mainland.
