(Part 3 of 3) Solar Decathlon 2005 -- A Solar Village on the National Mall
The 2005 Solar Decathlon brought together 18 college and university teams from around the globe to compete in designing, building, and operating the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home. In the Fall of 2005, they transported their homes from across the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Spain to the National Mall in Washington DC to take part in a ten-part competition.
This film follows the only California team, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, as they design, build and truck their house 3,000 miles to the nation's capitol. It shows their participation in the exciting competition, explores the innovative homes from other schools, and introduces the enthusiastic student teams.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Solar Decathlon 2005 showed that the clean, renewable energy of the sun is ready to power modern homes today. Since 2005, a new solar village has been built every 2 years as part of the Solar Decathlon competition, with the most recent taking place in Southern California. The next Solar Village will emerge in the Fall of 2015, in Irvine California, and will include 5 Californian teams. Other Solar Decathlons are also blossoming in China, Europe, and soon in South America. For more info visit www.solardecathlon.gov
