Northbound Cycles Installs the Ultima 3.35” Belt Drive on 2005 TwinCam Softail “Gertrude”.

Had a big plan to upgrade the primary in my bike with a BDL compensator eliminator, Barnett low profile lock up clutch and a few other goodies. Then I ran into a stupid deal on this complete setup by Ultima I just couldn’t say no to!! Thanks Mini ! I wasn’t sure what to think as I’ve heard mixed reviews of the brand. Here’s my personally impression.

I was impressed with the overall setup. The casting of the motor plate was a 7/10. The backside was rough a bit but nobody sees it so it’s just my ocd. The rest of it was solid.

The hardware holding the pressure plate together was loose! And not aligned correctly so I spent the time to make sure it was balanced and centred. Mostly for function and balance, but it would’ve also looked stupid during rotation and it would’ve bothered me and perhaps caused some issues down the road. I want reliability! Desert in the morning and 9400’ in the late afternoon on a mountain and a 70° temp change I don’t want issues!

The starter ring gear clearance to the jack shaft bushing cover was not sufficient in my opinion as it is touching. I’m going to set it up in my bench vice and take my die grinder with a non aggressive burr and take off maybe .020” or something like that just to satisfy my brain so I know there’s no chance of messing it up down the road. A little touch and then test it to only take off what I need. I’ll use a high temp automotive clear coat to seal it to prevent too much oxidization going forward.

The starter jack shaft assembly kinda confused me but once I realized I didn’t have to re use the spacer/slotted retainer for the old jack shaft bolt I was golden. Lol. The instructions are kinda shitty to be honest but I managed.

Gertrude’s intended HP and torque range is hopefully going to be in the 110/115 ballpark so the 68 lb yellow springs are not enough to handle what I’ll throw at that clutch so I’ve already ordered the heavy duty black springs and they will be sufficient. Hoping clutch pull doesn’t suffer tooooooo badly!!

Overall, in my books this kit is a solid 9/10. If they had spent a LITTLE more time on quality assurance and less time counting pennies I think they’d be better off but the only reason I didn’t give a 10 are shitty instructions and a little bit of fitment issues.

If you are wrenching and wanting to build a bike In your garage and you are not capable of running a welder, grinder, drill, cutting torch, big fucking hammer or aren’t able to fabricate brackets, reimagine how something may need to be located and think on the fly, it may cause you some grief. If you can do the above, she’s not rocket appliances boys. Get em on there! This kit looks great and I’m sure she’s gonna sound sick AF when I get to start her. It’s been a long 2 years in the making and I’m damn close!!
