This is a trebuchet, a gravity-powered medieval siege engine. #shorts

This is a trebuchet, a gravity-powered medieval siege engine. A heavy counterweight falls on the short arm, the long arm whips upward with a sling, and the projectile launches in a long arc. Modern hobby builds at the U.S. Punkin' Chunkin' championship send pumpkins 600 feet using just 300 kg of counterweight. Historical industrial trebuchets with 18-tonne counterweights threw 100 kg stones nearly half a kilometer. The unsolved engineering puzzle is the sling release - the millisecond when the rope leaves the hook at the end of the arm. Get it wrong and the projectile slams into the ground 5 meters away. UK enthusiast Hew Kennedy built a trebuchet with an 18,000 kg counterweight, and to this day refuses to show anyone his trigger design. Video author unknown.
