Film produced by the General Education Board which shows the limitations of education for the black population in the American South. History and current conditions of African Americans, from slavery and farming to special high school and college programs. Contrasting shots of impoverished villages and poor farms, with educated children learning job skills and modern training.

While filming in Memphis, crew members were jailed on suspicion of being agitators.
