Unseen Skies – Clip – SFF 21

The 68th Sydney Film Festival: 03-14 November 2021

Visionary American artist Trevor Paglen attempts his most audacious project yet – a compelling exploration of State and corporate surveillance.

Author-artist-activist-musician Paglen is perhaps best known for his photography. Notably, a series on black op sites used for government surveillance and data collection – including Pine Gap in central Australia. His new project, Orbital Reflector, is a 30-metre-long artwork that he plans to put into space. Visible to the naked eye, he hopes the piece will draw attention to the unseen structures, many linked to surveillance, that litter Earth's orbit. But the bureaucracy that such a project entails throws up barrier after barrier. Multiple award-winning journalist and director Yaara Bou Melhem follows Paglen as he tackles every hurdle. In the process, Unseen Skies reveals both the artist, his work and his purpose – to make visible the unseen.

Yaara Bou Melhem is a journalist and filmmaker whose work has received two international UN Media Peace Awards, two NY Film & TV Awards, a HK Human Rights Press Award and five Walkley Awards. In 2019 she was named Australian Freelance Journalist of the Year for her documentary War on Truth.
