3 Micro Video-Mics Compared | CM14/S20/M1

Synopsis:
All 3 of these mics are great and offer different features, but given the lowest price mic only acts as a stand-alone mic, that is the only feature being compared.

IMO, the Smallrig's sound was the most pleasing but, only marginally. The Neewer CM-14 gets my award for best bang for the buck, given the sound quality is so marginal between these 3 mics, at the price you can acquire the CM-14 at, it gets the award. I am not arguing that it is the best sounding, but I am only saying that if your only goal is to improve your camera's audio without paying a lot, the old adage of "you get what you pay for" does not seem applicable here. You can't go wrong with any of these mics for simple front-facing vlogging, but the CM-14 offers a good option at an unexpectedly low price point.

Setup:
All mics plugged directly into the camera and recorded at equal distance of about 30 inches. Levels were boosted to match in post, but no additional processing done on any mic sample.

Notable bullet points:
*The CM-14 is the most heavy duty/ solid-feeling mic, but lacks any meaningful shock resistance.
*The Smallrig S-20 is a newcomer that offers an included lapel mic, but the negative was the weakness of the shock mount.
*It's kind of hard to say anything bad about the 7ryms. It is the only mic that comes with a hardshell case, and the ability to use it as a USB mic is really cool.
