Food Stamp Changes 2020: What You Need to Know

There are some major changes coming to the USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, aka food stamps) in April 2020. If you receive these benefits, you need to know what to expect!

Around 700,000 people will lose their food stamps on April 1st. Are you one of them?

Significant changes are coming to the food stamps program on April 1st, 2020. This is because the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is cracking down on state waivers and instituting new, stricter rules about how waivers are issued.

The current USDA rules state that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (commonly called the food stamp program) is supposed to provide just three months of benefits to able-bodied adults without dependents. The rules say that these people can only receive food stamps for three months in a three-year period. If you fall in that category, the only way you can continue getting food stamps beyond that time is if you are working or volunteering for at least 80 hours per month.

Unless your state uses a wavier, anyway.

According to my research, 36 states have been relying on waivers to offer food stamps to able-bodied adults for longer than the three-month period set by the USDA. In these states, able-bodied adults without dependents can continue receiving food stamps for much longer.

The new rules that take affect on April 1st will restrict those waivers. Instead of entire states getting waivers, the waivers will be limited to specific areas with high unemployment. The waivers will also be temporary and won’t last as long as they did before.

The result? Nearly one million people will lose their food stamps as soon as the new rules take effect.
