Xin Shi Barber Shop, which opened its doors in 1945. Mr Loo 75, has been the proprietor of the barber shop since arriving in town 52 years ago from Perak.

“Back in the shop’s heyday during the disco crazed years of the 70s and 80s, we had a lot of customers asking us to fashion them with the style of that time. Now, our regular only ask for short timed hair, nice and neat or simply clean shaven”.

Mr Loo reminisced of the days where he used to serve up to 30 customers daily. Now, the numbers have waned so much. He is lucky to have three to five people through the door.

Mr Pan 77, who has been with the shop for 10 years. Xin Shi Barber shop is part of the original structures built in 1913 during British colonial rule.

Pan questioned the fate of the neighborhood and the barber shop when the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang express way (SUKE) is built. Now with talks of this monstrous project passing through the area, many in the neighborhood have decided to move elsewhere. It is really sad that after 70 years, we might have to close the shop for good.
