Open Space: Yung Pinch | Mass Appeal
"Everything I say is woke," says Yung Pinch, the long-haired Cali rapper who put Huntington Beach on the map with his '714Ever' project. "I have a positive message." But his upbringing was.
"Both of my parents did hard drugs and shit so they were in and out of jail," Pinch revealed during a recent visit to MASS APPEAL HQ. Raised by his grandmother and my grandfather, Pinch vowed to live clean. "I was like 'I'll never do drugs. I don't wanna be like my parents.'" That changed when his grandpa died. "I found out my grandpa smoked," he recalls. Around 6th grade he began smoking weed to help with the stress of losing his grandfather.
That's how he got the nickname Yung Pinch because he was known for pinching the blunt. He also coined the name "Bluntington Beach" for his hometown, which he describes as "paradise-warm weather, pretty girls. There's fake people… I mean there's fake people everywhere." Before he became a rap star Pinch used to surf, skate and snowboard. But these days he can't risk injury. His career is too important.
When he was still in school, Pinch made up his mind to pursue music and never looked back. "I got a tattoo on my neck-a music note with a rope around it," he recalls in his Open Space interview. "Music is my shit. I'm not trying to get no job. All you teachers looking at me hella funny thinking I ain't gonna be shit. Still getting good grades and hella respectful."
Check out Pinch's Open Space interview to learn about what his neighbor YG told him about repping Cali. As Pinch puts it, "Game all over the place, you just gotta soak it."
