Michael Haydn's Requiem and Mozart’s Misericordias Domini – 2024 Madrigal de Brasília

The concert program highlighted two important sacred works: the Requiem by Michael Haydn and Misericordias Domini by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, both strongly linked and of great personal significance to the conductor. The Requiem (Missa pro Defunctis) was composed by Michael Haydn in December 1771, during a period of double mourning marked by the death of Archbishop Sigismund from Salzburg and the composer's own daughter, Aloisia Josefa. The work, which requires soloists, mixed choir,and chamber orchestra, has a special connection with the guest conductor, who participated in its modern world premiere in the United States as solo bass and conducted the Brazilian premiere in 1994. Furthermore, this mass exerted a profound influence on Mozart, who used it directly as a structural, rhythmic, and melodic model for composinghis own epic Requiem. The second piece presented, Misericordias Domini, was written by Mozart in early 1775 for Elector Maximilian III of Bavaria, while the composer was working in Salzburg. It is a choral work of about six minutes for mixed choir, strings, and basso continuo, based on Psalm 89 from the Bible. Developed as a study in strict counterpoint, the piece blends classical phrasing with the Baroque tradition of Bach and Handel, alternating complex fugue passages with a solemn homophonic refrain. Years later, Mozart himself would reuse the themes of this offertory to structure the fugue sections of his iconic Requiem.
