The Making of “Sumo”- a Large Scale Hyperreal Silicone Sculpture

This is a brand new edit showing the making of my 2008 work titled “Sumo”.
This was a commissioned piece, and now resides in a private collection in Portugal.
It was the last time I created a large scale sculpture without utilizing any modern digital tools to help with the enlargement process such as 3D scanning, 3D modelling and cnc foam cutting tools. The enlargement of this sculpture from the small clay maquette involved an old school technique of slicing up the small Sumo maquette and then using an overhead projector to enlarge each slice to the large scale. These slices are are then joined together to make the full scale armature, onto which the clay is applied. A similar enlargement method was used when making the original T REX in the first Jurassic Park movie.

It was also the first time I used Epoxy to make the molds, something I have used ever since for large molds.

I hope you enjoy this film.
