Disclaimer:
Creating a master copy is not about plagiarism but about learning from a master artist's technique and gaining a deeper appreciation for their work. Chasing historical accuracy is interesting but only if it’s something you intend to pursue afterwards, in my case, I don’t plan on using rabbit skin glue, lead white and other materials like that at any point later, so there’s no point trying to use them just for the sake of accuracy. I’m more interested in the aesthetic side of the copy, I want to focus on the subject, on the skills needed to achieve a certain vision, not on the exact materials used. That’s why I chose to use materials that I have at my disposal and pigments that I typically use in my own practice. My philosophy about master copying is that it should be something you make to improve your own skills, it should be something you do for you and the idea that you can recreate the exact material conditions in which the original was created is an illusion. For me, a master copy is a tribute, I do it to find inspiration in the Master’s work, I do it because I like the artistic value of the subject and I don’t care if I don’t have exactly the same materials and techniques that were used in the original. I try to use a similar approach, as much as possible but I don’t bother too much with historical and technical accuracy. So it’s a more relaxed take on master copying. If you’re cool with that, fine.
