Historic Gregory House at Torreya State Park, near Bristol, FL, Jan 2023.

Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, Torreya is popular for camping, hiking and picnicking. Bird-watching is also a popular activity. Over 100 species of birds have been spotted in the park.

Forests of hardwood trees provide the finest display of fall color found in Florida. The park is named for an extremely rare species of Torreya tree that grows only on the bluffs along the Apalachicola River.

Torreya State Park is rich in history. During the Civil War some 200 Confederate soldiers called the high bluffs home for two years. The cannon emplacements are still visible today along one of our hiking trails. We also offer daily tours of the 1840s plantation home of Jason Gregory and family.

This 3,000-square-foot home originally sat on the west bank of the Apalachicola River. The home was donated to the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s with the understanding that the home would be dismantled and moved. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) workers took every brick and board, loaded the pieces on barges, transferred to the east bank and then reconstructed the fine old home where it can be seen today.

Torreya State Park is one of the original Florida State Parks opening to the public in 1935. The park was created by the hard work of the CCC and the Florida Board of Parks. The expert craftsmanship of the CCC workers can still be seen today in the reconstruction of the circa 1840s Historic Gregory House or the beautiful stone bridge on the old Federal Highway or inside the original CCC barracks. No matter what you choose, you will love Torreya.
