How to get work at set: for Hairdressers and makeup artists
Learn what it takes to start working on set: the dos and don’ts. Learn about the easiest way to get to the hairdresser’s union for movie set. Best way to start is going into student films to practice and freelance to get experience on movie set or production or photo shoot. The union either requires you to complete a set of hours approved for a show or the show might flip and you might automatically get into the union. The best way to be noticed is to just keep working and helping others on set. It takes about two years to build recognition with people who are in film, doing lighting, or is in a project in a film industry to get makeup or hair job for a movie. Have a separate Facebook page only for your job. Go to colleges and find who is doing student films and help them there in the beginning. Be nice to everyone on set, collect their business cards, remember their names; chances are, that whoever is doing lighting might be a producer of a film, too. Focus on what you are doing; do you want to do editorial, movies, music videos; what do you specialize in; they would ask you if you special in set work. The best way to act on set is to assist people and make sure to be prepared to drive, be prepared to make all your stuff. Any time you are on set assisting, ask the assistant answer the client questions. You are only there to assist. Sometimes you can’t get credit when you are working as an assistant on set, but the time will come when you will be the main hairdresser or makeup artist and you’ll be credited for the work. Leave your information with your hairdresser that you are assisting and he or she will give you a job, because they are overwhelmed with hair job offers, so they will refer you to a job to do hair on set. Cosmetologists are hired faster on set than makeup artists. Ask the producer about the social media policy when doing hair and makeup. This video is for cosmetologists and makeup artists and beauty school students, and hairdressers to teach them how to work on set and learn the set etiquette.
