BRUCE LEE | James Coburn RARE Interview! MUST WATCH!
Bruce Lee’s Hollywood friend – James Coburn!
In this episode, Charles Damiano, Bruce Lee Collector and fan, shares rare Documentary footage of James Coburn, Bruce Lee's Hollywood friend and student, as he discusses being on the end of Bruce Lee's one inch punch, his admiration for Bruce Lee, his skill, speed and power and how amazing Bruce Lee was, as a Human Being, Martial Artist and Friend. By the end of this 15 minute episode you will feel like you had a private lesson in JKD with Bruce Lee, as he teaches James Coburn, in his private one-on-one lessons, his "Jeet Kune Do"!
Jay Sebring, Bruce’s hairdresser, introduced him to Steve McQueen, and in turn this lead to a long-term friendship with James Coburn. Coburn was to become a student of Bruce Lee, and took regular martial arts lessons in “Jeet Kune Do”, Bruce’s personal liberation method in fighting.
Bruce developed a movie with James Coburn and Stirling Silliphant called “The Silent Flute”. In February 1971, with a completed script and Warner Brothers backing, Bruce flew to India with Silliphant and Coburn to scout locations suitable for a “timeless, location-less” movie set for the project.
Sadly, this did not turn out as expected, and soon after the trip Coburn withdrew from the project, and with him, Warner Brother’s money.
After Bruce’s success in Hong Kong cinema, James Coburn visited Bruce in April 1973 to try to persuade him to pick up the threads of the “Silent Flute”. He and Bruce gave an impromptu press photo opportunity at Kai Tak airport, but he met with little success.
Bruce Lee’s second funeral in Seattle, Washington, was a very sedate and private affair and attended by only close family and friends. One of the coffin bearers was his Hollywood friend James Coburn.
What follows is the first known interview with James Coburn in which he discusses his admiration for the late star, and Bruce Lee’s philosophy of martial arts and acting. This excerpt is taken from the TV show called “Backstage”, hosted by Johnny Grant, when James Coburn was promoting his then new film in 1980. “The Baltimore Bullet”.
