NAVY LOG TV SHOW "CALL CONRAD" starring DOUGLAS KENNEDY & EVE MILLER 60194

In this episode of NAVY LOG, entitled "CALL CONRAD", originally aired on Sept 5th, 1957. Plot summary: Commander Henry (Hank) Bourne, portrayed by Douglas Kennedy, a pilot for the Military Air Transport Service, MATS, was sidelined by an accident to his left eye (torn retina) which was caused, by all things, an oil dip stick. He was down on his luck and was taking a MATS flight from Pearl Harbor to San Francisco among other military personnel, their family members and an attractive lady, Lois MacKenzie, portrayed by Eve Miller, who was a member of the USO and had entertained US troops throughout Korea during the campaign. It soon became clear that Hank did not want any sympathy from Lois and that Lois did not want anything to do with Hank’s self-pity. She was an optimist and when Hank told her that he had surgery and 10 to one odds against him, she replied that it looked to her to be a 1 in 10 chance for successful recovery. One could only guess that her positive and cheerful attitude might rub off on him.
As the flight progressed, it turned out that an engine on the C-54 conked out, another was acting up, and the pilot was becoming concerned of the possibility of ditching in the Pacific. Hank, having been a pilot for the MATS with over one hundred flights under his belt before his accident, provided assistance to the pilot and copilot by having them communicate their situation to the Continental Air Defense site located on San Clemente Island. He then reassured the passengers that all was OK.
During progression of the flight, the passengers, especially the children and their mother, were frightful and apprehensive. Lois then took action. With her calming personality, positive outlook and entertainment background, she calmed the children down by playful singing and had everyone else feeling a lot better about the dangerous predicament they found themselves in. As the show ends, Bourne learns that MacKenzie lost her leg in a plane crash. MacKenzie compares notes with Bourne on the tarmac and discuss the odds of them surviving their ordeal, and walk off together.
