Israeli Military Goes After "Hamas Strongholds" in Gaza, Battles At Al-Shati Camp, People Flee North

In the ongoing conflict in the northern Gaza Strip, plumes of smoke rose as Israeli military vehicles operated in the region. The war, now in its sixth week, was triggered by Hamas' surprise attack into Israel on October 7. Israel's response has led to significant death and destruction in Gaza, forcing nearly two-thirds of its 2.3 million Palestinian residents to flee their homes.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported operating in various locations, including Beach refugee camp in northern Gaza. During an evacuation of civilians from a building, Hamas opened fire at IDF soldiers, resulting in a firefight where the troops killed the gunmen. A fighter jet struck a Hamas weapons depot, and troops near al-Shati identified and engaged four Hamas operatives using a drone, resulting in three deaths.

As the conflict intensifies, Palestinians continue to flee northern Gaza, with Israel focusing its campaign on Gaza City. The Israeli military claims that Hamas' main command center is located in and under the Shifa Hospital complex, a claim denied by the militant group and hospital staff, who argue that it serves as a pretext for military strikes.

Israeli officials have confirmed 41 soldiers killed in Gaza since the ground offensive began, while the overall death toll in Israel stands at least 1,200 people, primarily from the initial Hamas attack.
