Blue Jay Snatches Up A Baby Chipping Sparrow From Its Nest
It happens really quickly so I slowed it down at the end of the video. In a bit of ominous foreshadowing the baby bird that gets snatched up in the end is the one who doesn't get fed in the beginning and gets stepped on by the momma bird while she was feeding the others. I had to Google whether Blue Jays really do this kind of thing or if I just videoed the one psycho Jay in the neighborhood. Turns out, yep, Blue Jays do snatch up baby birds and eat them though that activity may be uncommon according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Jay picked off all three of the baby birds over the course of two to three days. Talk about empty nest syndrome.
