Child's Play - September 19, 1982 Clue Reel B

Here's something we found a surprising amount of among Bill Cullen's personal tapes--the "clue reels" from tapings of the 1982-83 game show "Child's Play." For a behind-the-scenes buff, it's interesting for the glimpse that it gives you into how the sausage was made:

For the first round, two videotapes were assembled: an "odd reel" and an "even reel." The odd reel had all three definitions for the first word of the game, the even reel had all three definitions for the second word of the game, the odd reel then had all three definitions for the third word of the game, etc. That giant TV screen onstage apparently had two videotape machines hooked up to it. When Word #1 was solved, they switched to the second machine for word #2 while a technician cued up word #3 on the first machine, and they just alternated from tape to tape like that through the entire episode. A different set of tapes was assembled for the Fast Play round.

Whether Bill asked for these tapes after the taping or he was just given them, we don't know, but from what we've dug up so far, Bill had at least twelve weeks' worth of definitions saved on tape at home.
