Lokvarsko Lake is an artificial lake created by damming the Lokvar River. The dam's construction took place from 1952 to 1955, primarily carried out by young volunteers. Hence the original name "Omladinsko jezero," translates to "Youth Lake." After the flooding, a small settlement, several sawmills, and a section of the famous Lujzijane road remained underwater.
Although artificial, the lake blends perfectly into the forested surroundings of Gorski Kotar. It is located about 40 kilometres away from the city of Rijeka, the largest Croatian port. The lake is part of the Vinodol hydroelectric system.
Despite its temporary absence, Lokvarsko Lake continues to be a beloved destination for nature enthusiasts, attracting visitors from both near and far.
