Engineers Created Robot That Walk & Roll Like TARS from Interstellar 😍 #interstellar #robot #shorts
Interstellar-Inspired TARS3D: The Robot That Walks and Rolls
Building a real-life HAL 9000 or R2D2 is already challenging, but creating a working version of TARS from *Interstellar* is next-level. TARS looked like a stainless steel block with legs sprouting from its shoulders. To achieve this, Aditya Sripada, a robotics engineer, and his collaborator Abhishek Warrier built TARS3D, a robot inspired by the movie.
TARS3D has four telescopic “pillars” that move independently. They can form an X-shape and extend curved pads as “feet,” allowing it to roll like a wheel or walk in a human-like manner. This makes it the first TARS-inspired robot capable of both walking and rolling. The robot uses deep reinforcement learning to learn new movements and optimize its gaits, discovering ways to move that traditional methods cannot.
While Nolan’s TARS was a puppet and much simpler to operate, TARS3D demonstrates the potential of non-human-like robots. Its design opens new possibilities for robots moving through human-made environments.
Though still small (25 cm tall and 990 g) and cable-connected, the team plans to test it across different terrains. Sripada shared that building TARS3D, mostly on weekends and nights, reminded him of the joy of robotics—the thrill of failure, discovery, and finally seeing something come to life.
