Man Mentions Taliban, Fires at Officers in Violent Fairfax Traffic Stop

Fairfax, Virginia — April 23, 2025 | 2:36 p.m.

An officer with the Fairfax County Police Department initiated a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Majestic Lane after spotting a 1999 Toyota Corolla displaying an expired safety inspection sticker. The driver, later identified as 36-year-old Jamal Wali of Fairfax, immediately became combative and refused to comply with verbal commands.

Due to Wali's behavior, the officer requested backup. When additional units arrived on scene, the situation escalated rapidly. Wali suddenly drew a firearm and fired a single shot through the driver’s side window. The bullet struck one officer in the bicep, passed through, and continued into the forearm of a second officer. The same round then exited the second officer and traveled across the street, shattering the rear windshield of a parked vehicle.

Wali attempted to fire a second shot, but his weapon malfunctioned.

A third officer, positioned on the passenger side of the vehicle, responded with gunfire. He discharged his weapon, striking Wali four times. Officers immediately rendered aid at the scene.
