Marco Pantani goes full gas up the Santuario di Oropa in Giro d'Italia 1999, setting a big record up the climb and achieving around 1875 VAM / 6.7 w/kg for 17 minutes. This set up Pantani to keep the Maglia Rosa in Milan but he got kicked out of the Giro d'Italia just 4 days later before stage 20 at Madonna di Campiglio for returning a hematocrit test of over 50%.
