British Paratroopers Stole A Secret Nazi Radar Station #short #history #ww2

The Bruneval Raid — codenamed Operation Biting — took place on the night of February 27–28, 1942, and was the first successful operation by British airborne forces. By 1941, RAF bombers were suffering heavy losses to German night-fighters guided by the enemy's advanced "Würzburg" radar, and British scientists, led by Dr. R.V. Jones, urgently needed to examine one to develop countermeasures. Aerial photography spotted a Würzburg radar on the cliffs at Bruneval in occupied France, and a daring plan was hatched: drop paratroopers to seize the radar's key components and evacuate them by sea. About 120 men of C Company, 2nd Parachute Battalion, commanded by Major John Frost (later famous at Arnhem), parachuted in by moonlight, accompanied by Royal Engineers and an RAF radar technician, Flight Sergeant Cox, to dismantle the equipment. The French Resistance confirmed the escape beach was not mined. The paratroopers overwhelmed the defenders, removed the vital radar parts under fire, captured a German operator, then fought their way to the beach and were evacuated by the Royal Navy. The captured technology helped Britain understand and jam German radar, saving countless aircrews.
