VFL - Best AFL mark by Northern Bullants Jack Boyd - AFL MARKS

Northern Bullants forward Jack Boyd soared to take this mark of the year contender against Frankston Dolphins on Friday 18th June 2021.

Meet Jack Boyd, the uni student who took a hanger as good as any taken this season.
Shai Bolton, Jack Riewoldt and Liam Ryan have pulled in some stunning marks so far this season, but a university student turned VFL player took a mark on Friday night that could easily sit alongside those of the AFL’s high flyers.

Northern Bullants forward Jack Boyd pulled in a stunning mark against the Frankston Dolphins, taking a grab that one Twitter user dubbed the ‘Hanger in Franga’.

But the 20-year-old science and engineering student was busy studying for exams on Saturday, along with receiving a few congratulatory messages from family and friends.
Boyd, who missed his over-age season with the Northern Knights in the NAB League last year due to COVID-19, admitted he wasn’t aiming to take such a spectacular mark, especially because of the slippery conditions at Skybus Stadium in Frankston.

“I’ve taken a couple at training but that was my first in-game one where I got that good flight,” Boyd told The Age on Saturday.

“The ball was coming in and my man was a little bit under it. I thought I would just put my leg up and hopefully push him away from it and try to mark it or bring it to ground as it was pretty slippery.

“Then I ended up jumping over him and he stood up and it gave me that second lift. I ended up marking it on my chest and coming down.

“It was a pretty good feeling.”

Jack Boyd’s astonishing grab in the VFL won’t soon be forgotten.
Boyd finished the night with two goals and 16 possessions as his Bullants fell to the Dolphins 13.15 (93) to 10.5 (65).

It wasn’t until he saw the video that he realised just how good that mark was.

“When I landed I thought that felt pretty good,” Boyd said.

“You really feel that second lift. When he pushed against my leg and gave me that second lift, I thought that will probably look pretty good.

“When I saw it on video it looked even better than I thought it would.”

Boyd is only at the start of his VFL career but has made a good fist of his first few games with the Bullants, who have rebuilt as a stand-alone club after their partnership with Carlton was ended due to COVID budget cuts last year.

He hopes to keep playing well and catch the eye of an AFL club after spending his draft year in 2019 focusing on his year 12 studies so he could get into his bachelor of science, master of engineering course at the University of Melbourne.

“I was supposed to come back [to NAB League] as a 19-year-old last year but that was when COVID-19 struck so I missed the whole year of footy, which was a little disheartening,” Boyd said.

“It’s just great to be back playing footy. I kept in contact with the Bullants. I trained with them a few times when they were the Northern Blues in 2019 and [coach] Josh Fraser kept me in the loop and had me come down for this season.

“The Bullants have had to adapt a lot with COVID and the rules constantly changing. We have had to adapt on which grounds we could use and what training we could do. We have just kept going and kept putting our best foot forward.”But the 20-year-old science and engineering student was busy studying for exams on Saturday, along with receiving a few congratulatory messages from family and friends.
