Charles Taylor Jailed For 50 Years
Liberian president Charles Taylor is on his way to prison. The special tribunal for Sierra Leone handed him 50 years behind bars for supplying arms to rebels and aiding war crimes in Sierra Leone in exchange for diamonds. The stiff sentence which the former president is to serve out in a British jail has been greeted with emotional scenes of celebration by Sierra Leonean victims, most of them amputees. Taylor will appeal the sentence. The news came as four Kenyan suspects facing charges of crimes against humanity before the international criminal court prepared for the status conference due in two weeks. Attorney general Prof. Githu Muigai has taken issue with claims by ICC prosecutor Louis Moreno Ocampo that the Kenyan government is not doing enough to protect witnesses. Abdi Osman has been following both the Sierra Leonean and Kenyan cases.
