The amazing 1968 CCR song that got me into GUITAR SOLOS! (This is for you, Dad!)

June 3/23. This is where my interest in guitar solos started. CCR's 'Susie Q'. My Dad played the CCR greatest hits 8 track all the time around 1970, in the house, in the van, and this was my intro to extended guitar solos and instrumental sections that got me to get a guitar at age 10 in 1972. 'I heard it through the grapevine' was another favorite SOLO from Fogerty, even though both these songs were covers. (I much prefer CCR versions to the originals) The main part of the song that I enjoy jamming to is the D, C, E segment of the instrumental section. Took over 50 years for me to finally do my take of this song! The CCR love continued through the 70's, and when kids in my school where worshipping KISS, which I thought was hilarious, I was like "Sorry, dudes, it's the Stones and CCR for me."

I finally saw Fogerty live in 1988, and went with my Dad. Fogerty didn't play any CCR songs at that point so all we heard were songs from two solo albums. Fogerty refused to play CCR songs as he would have to pay royalties to Saul Zaentz of Fantasy records, who now owned all of CCR's music. (Most disgusting incident of greed and theft in the history of music. Saul Zaentz would eventually sue Fogerty on his 1985 comeback solo album song 'The old man down the road' for sounding too much like CCR, for self plagiarism. He wanted the money from John's solo album as well. Imagine the sick mind at work here. Thankfully, that scumbag lost the case, and thankfully he is now DEAD. Fogerty also wrote a song about Saul Zaentz on the same album (literally calling him a pig) called 'Zaentz can't dance' and was forced to change the title to 'Vanz can't danz' to avoid being sued again. "Zaentz can't dance and he'll steal your money...watch him or he'll rob you blind." The video with dancing pigs is still on youtube. On the news of Saul's death in 2014, Fogerty posted a link to the video.

Saw Fogerty again in 1997 and that was when I finally got to hear all the CCR hits. Saw him a third time in 2018. Had a ticket for my Dad as well but he was recovering from cancer and a bad fall, and could not make the show. He died a few months later. This one is dedicated to Dad, for always playing good music in the house!

My other main influence as a child was hearing Torquay by the Fireballs. That was a surf instrumental, and I think that was the first song that made me want to play guitar.
